The Servant of Two Masters Adapted by Aaron Jan
Mar 17-27 VIMEO VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE
CONTENT WARNING: The Servant of Two Masters contains coarse language, depictions of violence and disturbing subject matter.
From the director: The Servant of Two Masters is a farce about acquiring capital, specifically how much one man is willing to suffer to rise above his station. I am drawn to the classism in the text, Truffaldino's hunger to attain fiscal mobility and what the exact purpose of producing an escapist farce is in 2022. What parts of 18th-century Italy are mirrored in contemporary western culture? Who is allowed to rise above their status? Who deserves our sympathy in a capitalist container? How can the poor become protagonists in a story that doesn't belong to them? I want to update what commedia can be now - by exploring the tropes and stock characters we see in reality TV and what we choose to ignore in pursuit of our own capitalist joyriding
